In 2002 I asked Kiyoshi Mizutani if he would be interested in collaborating with me. Kiyoshi was the very first person I ever considered collaborating with and I have always held his work in the highest of respects. I wanted this collaboration to be as mysterious as possible so I asked him to simply give me "high/treble sounds" and I would create "low/bass sounds". That was the only strategy. I received the DAT from Kiyoshi and it was these remarkable sounds of cicadas and other insect recordings from Japan that he recorded straight to digital. I played the digital DAT straight to the mix while I played recordings from a large analog reel to reel of low bass mix of field recordings of wind and acoustic instruments. Both sources, digital and analog were mixed exactly 50/50. There was only one mix take and it was perfect. GARDEN is one of my most cherished recordings.
